Halloween 2005

We are planning two dates for Halloween.
We will lose the bus and lower the price to $5.

The location will be the East Bay.

The theme is "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein".

It is a costume party, you can dress in your Halloween costume or in period costume (1820's to 1900's),
Or fittingly as the Frankenstein monster him/herself.

The story and theater concept should blow your mind.

Conceptional-ly, we have lost our way a little.
We started out without a bus.
When the Police ran us out of our birthplace
(tire-beach 24th/Third-SF)
we found a natural transition to the bus.

The Popcorn concept is that the audience moves from performance to performance in a 'procession'. This gives performer and audience a chance to break from the static almost TV like constant focus on art from the stage. And brings us all back out to community focus and outdoorsy focus.

Unfortunately, we started relying heavily on the bus to cover any lack of story line or performance.
And eventually it has become a 'party bus' first.
And less an alternate form of stage presentation.

We hope that you enjoy our return to basics (too cutely?)
Called Popcorn Unpopped.

hi there, gang. first off, thanks for all the wonderful compliments and ideas regarding last month's bus. _you_ make it so good. i've been traveling this month and working on many projects, and haven't had time to goof off on tribe, but i just read all the posts and am loving all of them and all of you.

anyway, enough of the love fest; to the point! hernan and i realized we could sure use some fire spinning for the bus this friday. are you a fire spinner? do you want to ride around on the bus having a great time and burning stuff (well, burning the wick your poi or staff or whatever)? hit me with a message if you wanna, and we'll work it on out. yay!

Yes it is a crime.

The month we were planning to go skinny dipping in the East Bay Hills.

Plus we made a big mistake. After last month I was hiding behind my couch, waiting for the secret police of a certain religious order, while Sig was doing her usual_Making Good Things Happen_ .

I forgot to invite Shadow Circus along. I really love them!

Anyway Rebecca-SugarBunni will be back this month. And hopefully next month. Too.

We might be persuaded to take 2 trips this month. Even though Sig assures me her social calendar is overbooked. Is anyone interested?

We have a cool thing going please only tell people that you know are cool.

It is always a little hazardous to get an article in the paper. Unfortunately it is also good for the attendance numbers and random new people.
The point I want to make is that we do things that are not mainstream and we dont want to include people who may have a hard time understanding or enjoying our 4 hour tour.

When you are off the bus please do not interact with strangers.
Some people may view our "Temporary Art appropriations" as tresspassing or vandalism or theft. And the less evidence we leave of our 'visit' the better.

What we do may not be interpreted as following the letter of the law. We strongly disagree abut we do not want to blow our "mellow" in a futile debate.

Popcorn was designed to be a "_HIT & RUN" art event.
It is fun to enjoy the "HIT" but remember we also have to "RUN".
When savored like a fine wine the "RUN" is more delicious than the "HIT". Because we got away. We didnt disturb anybody and cleaned up our beer cans. It is low impact way of shaking cultures foundations.

Rookie "Appropriaters" leave a trace because they want the world to know they did something. Expert "Appropriators" live to "appropriate" another day (Or six years in my case).

hiya, friends. sig here, fearless leader of the popcorn bus. sorry its taken me a while to introduce myself. i admit, the whole tribe thing intimidates me.

anyway, enough of the small talk, here's the information you're really looking for - the theme for may's popcorn anti-theater bus: SPACE ODDITY.

its outer space all night long. come dressed as your favorite alien, robot, flying saucer, astronaut, or, even better, as your favorite spaced out david bowie! prize for best costume, of course, and rest assured there will be a sing along.

tickets aren't on sale quite yet, but soon, my friends, soon. also important to note: this will also be my birthday bus, so you do not want to miss this one. so, be there may 13 (yes, AND its a friday the 13th - best bus ever!)

What kind of unique stories will they tell.

Are the 'creature's scary?

Just who are they?

Sig is genuinely funny.

More than just "bringing the funny," she is interested in you and your evening.

In order to "Maintain the Vibe" and not 'lose a good night/morning".
She has up and moved a 'rave' (after being busted) way too many times.

She brings the values and party savvy
of the East Bay renegade party community.

You will begin a new journey.

You will be happier and feel loved. For the rest of your life.

Casting Call

seeking artists, performers, entertainers, characters,
experts, talents, and human spectacles

dearest friends and strangers (and pardon me if you get this twice,
three times...),

i seek conspicuously creative people of all ilk to do their thing for
the popcorn anti-theater bus.

perhaps you don't know what that is. in short, it works like this: on
the night of the second friday of each month, a group of people - some
friends, some strangers - board a bus in san francisco, and ride around
in it while enjoying the on-board entertainment and making merry -
talking, partying, having good times. the bus stops at a mysterious
and wonderful bay area spot, and the bus riders disembark to see a
performance, look at art, or engage in some other adventure. then its
back on the bus, and the whole cycle starts anew. if you'd like, check
out the (old and outdated, but still useful and soon to be updated)
popcorn bus website: http://www.popcornantitheater.com/

me, i'm the leader of the bus: ring master, navigator, enabler, and den
mother. and i need you - your talents and your skills - to make this
thing happen, both off the bus and on.

play the accordion? rock lady of spain from the back seat. do a great
andy goldsworthy impersonation? we'll take the bus up to sibley park
where you've built your monumental rock towers. culinary master? hold
a pie eating contest at the benches at the ferry building.

recite your latest poem from the top of mount tam. teach the bus how
to knit. play that schubert quartet in the parking lot at bay meadows.
give the bus a lecture on super symmetric string theory. screen your
film against the back wall of the amc 1000. demonstrate your japanese
rope work in your very own garage.

oh, and here are some other miscellaneous details: the bus makes it's
triumphant return after a year-plus hiatus on friday, march 11. the
theme will be "the rite of spring". every month, there'll be a new
theme. the entertainment need not adhere to the theme per se, but
dress up in a costume, at least. for the rite of spring, try flowers,
bunnies, baby animals, blades of grass, virgin sacrifices, etc.

so, anyway, as i'm sure you can imagine, the quicker, simpler, and more
self-contained your project is, the better. electricity will have to
be imported to most locations, and we may need to set up and break down
real fast. nonetheless, why let that stop you! i am open to any and
all suggestions. in fact, surprise me! impress me! but please email
your ideas to me in the following format*:

• your name, both your personal, individual name, and that of your
ensemble (if you do that kind of thing).
• what you do (or what you're willing to have done to you, as the case
may be).
• where you'd like to do it, i.e., on or off the bus; in the city, east
bay, marin; at the park, at the beach, in your kitchen (just think, all
those drunk bus riders in your kitchen).
• special needs you'll fulfill yourself and/or obstacles you need help
overcoming.
• your availability, e.g., need to do it in the summer because that's
the best viewing time for your favorite constellations; can't do april
because you'll be visiting gramma, etc.
• your contact information.

please feel free to forward this on to anyone you think might even be a
little bit interested, including mailing lists you might be on.

thanks for your time, and i look forward to reading your brilliant
suggestions soon.

love,
sig

* just in cast that doesn't make sense, here's a demo:

• my name is sig, and my band is called the germans.
• we play noisy, haphazard punk, and our singer is known to break
glassware, knock over furniture, and lose his shoes.
• we'd like to perform on the boat launch past all the condos at the
far south end of jack london square in oakland.
• we play electric and will bring our own generator, but will need help
getting it around, because it won't fit in our car.
• we would prefer to play june, because that's our drunk singer's
birthday, but can't do april, because we're rocking a wedding that
weekend.
• please contact me via this email address, or call 510.207.3160.
